Take the First Step

Before you start up those stairs to creating your own profitable and successful business, we must first learn how the successful think about business.

1. A clear vision, your why, your purpose.

Step 1 of how to build your own successful business – is the foundation. Your vision may be based on a product, a service, or simply the desire to solve a problem for your customers. This is the “why” of your endeavour, and it must be relevant to your tribe. Your customers care about how your vision aligns with their values.

Don’t compromise on the big things. Vision. Purpose. Core values. Write these things in stone and never budge. They become and remain the soul of your business.

Plus, and here’s the big one… when you’re all alone, sitting in a dark room wondering why your business is failing, there is only one true thing to power you forward and turn it into a success — you believe in your purpose, your why.

2. The ability to quickly pitch your business.

Step 2 of how to build your own successful business – is the elevator pitch. No matter what kind of business you run, you should be able to describe your brand to prospective customers, investors, or even friends and family members in a few short sentences that make them want to know more. If you can’t do this, then you need to take another look at step 1.

3. The importance of Identity.

Step 3 of how to build your own successful business – is don’t underestimate how closely related branding is to your identity. Branding is the most important thing when building an identity for your company. The objectives that a good brand will achieve include delivering the message clearly, confirming your credibility, connecting your target prospects emotionally, motivating the buyer, and securing user loyalty.

The most important thing about your business Identity is, it’s all about you. In many small businesses, owners feel that they are selling themselves when they sell their businesses.  This is because the two are so closely related.  Your business contains your ethics, your morals, your thoughts and desires, more importantly your blood sweat and tears.  You are the brand. There is no escaping it.

If you can’t bring yourself to be the face of your brand use a good designer that understands who you are. So the soul of your company always remains true to your Identity.

4. Network, network, network.

Step 4 of how to build your own successful business – is to start networking. Now.

Hibernating is fine for bears, but not for people. Join social networks and local associations. Create Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts to see which your peers and customers hang out in. Look for opportunities to reach your target market through speaking events, guest blogging and collaborations with other businesses.

5. Persistence.

Step 5 of how to build your own successful business – is the drive to keep going through the good times and bad.

Many of the most successful entrepreneurs in history failed at their first (and in some cases second, third, or more) businesses. Notable examples include Harland Sanders, founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken, Richard Branson of Virgin Atlantic, and even Bill Gates. Perhaps the most famous example in history is Thomas Edison and his many attempts to design the light bulb. “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work” – Thomas Edison

Many new ventures fail or experience setbacks, but you cannot let this stop you from trying over and over again until you devise the formula that works. Remember, it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Building a business is neither for the faint of heart or the speed demon. Build systems for the long-haul and focus on small-connected steps.

And get help when you need it. It’s hard to see the forest when you are standing under a tree but a second set of eyes can give you better vision.

6. Focus, faith, passion.

Step 6 of how to build your own successful business – is the ability to focus.

You don’t need to be able to see the whole picture from inception to completion.  But you do need to be able to focus when everything seems like it is falling down around you.  Use your faith in your vision and your passion, to stay focused on the prize.  To successfully run your own business, you must be able to prioritise, set your own schedule, meet your own deadlines and always believe that you can achieve greatness by just taking that next step forward.

But remember to get help when you need it. When you are busy, it’s easy to lose focus. Setting the goal is the easy part. Staying focused and being accountable to the process of achieving the goal is the hard part.

We often hear the words 'The first step is the hardest', but those of us working everyday in our businesses know the truth. It's Not! Every step is hard. Staying motivated, true to our dreams and not leaving work everyday in a straitjacket is not easily managed. If we just focus on one step at a time instead of the top of the staircase we can handle and enjoy the everyday. The top of that staircase will get closer, just don't stop.
